So many herbs, so little thyme…

Last night, my roommates and I enjoyed a nice glass of red wine (along with a much needed exchange of back massages) and afterwards, I decided to relax in my room and watch the movie of a trailer we previewed in my Media Industries class yesterday: United 93. Knowing it would be hard to watch, I prepared myself for the impeccable film that chronicles the unimaginable events aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked during the September, 11 attacks of 2001.

I went to sleep thinking that 14 years ago, individuals all over the world went to bed without a thought that the next day their lives would be changed forever. Millions of people slept with their loved ones for the last time, heard their loved ones’ voices for the last time, held their children for the last time…

It made me think that no one will ever know what the next day, the next hour, or the next few minutes have in store.

Live every single moment to the fullest and never, ever miss an opportunity to make sure that those you love know that you love them.

My thoughts are with those who lost loved ones on this tragic morning 14 years ago. We will always remember the lives of the men, women and children who passed on September, 11, 2001 and ensure that no one is ever forgotten. Take a moment today to really reflect and remember the day that changed the United States forever.

And with that, this morning I reflected on one of the last moments at home that I spent with my beautiful mama. After returning from D.C. for 8 months with a few new spices, I whipped us up a nice brunch to enjoy on the porch over a nice little mother-daughter talk before I headed back to St. Lawrence for my senior year.

Located in the lively Union Market in Washington, D.C., Bazaar Spices is a small spice shop where husband and wife, Ivan and Monica, sell fresh gourmet quality spices, seasonings, herbs and specialty food items. They share a common appreciation for spices and herbs used as natural healing remedies and the idea that one does not have to even leave their backyard to taste high quality spices, herbs, botanicals, rice, flour and lentils from all around the world.

I first found out about Monica and Ivan’s lovely business when I attended Heirloom D.C.’s Summer Soirée. During my last week in D.C., I visited Union Market and met Ivan in person while still conversing with Monica over email. Both are wonderful, kind and generous individuals who are simply passionate and very excited about the growing success of their spice shop in the heart of D.C.

These spices were great in my baked egg ramekins and were also very flavorful in some meatballs made for one of my last memorable dinners in D.C.

Gruyere Herb Baked Eggs with Campaña Tomatoes & Spices

Ingredients (yields 1 serving size)

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup 2% milk
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. fresh basil, chopped
  • 2 Campaña tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. green onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. green pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp. Bazaar Spices Sabzi Ghormeh (warming blend of traditional Persian stewing herbs such as fenugreek, parsley, leek and cilantro)
  • 1/2 tsp. Bazaar Spices Shichimi Togarashi (Japanese table spice consisting of chili peppers, sesame seeds, dehydrated orange, poppy seeds, ginger and seaweed)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Top with gruyere cheese

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, milk and lemon juice with a fork. Chop up basil, tomatoes, green onion, and green pepper then add to the bowl along with your spices. Mix well. then add salt and pepper to taste.

Pour mixture into small ramekin and top with gruyere cheese.

Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 25 minutes. Bon appétit!
