But seriously… it would actually be nice if there was snow on the ground right now, Mother Earth. 20 days until Christmas and Bex is just not feeling the spirit quite yet hence why my roommates and I are finally going to get our Christmas tree tomorrow accompanied by some eggnog icecream at good ‘ol Stewarts.
This little Christmas cookie recipe was surprisingly…a final project for one of my classes! (Yes, Dad. This is where your money is going. Into my new recipe collection….just kidding).
This semester I took a course called Adaptations where we analyze various novels, plays, scripts and movies to see how they are adapted across different modes of engagement. We have analyzed Cinderella, The Scarlet Letter, and more. Overall, it has really been an interesting class and one in which I have learned a lot about the various types of adaptations.
Our final project, which we started very early in the semester, was an adaptation of our own and could involve any sourcetext that we chose.
I knew within seconds what mine would be: White Christmas, the original song sung by Bing Crosby. Only the best of the best, am I right? Man, was this project fun. As opposed to what some of my classmates were doing, such as adapting novels into short stories or short clips; I decided to adapt the song…into a cookie! My “product” that I handed in to my professor was a mason jar full of the “White Christmas Cookie” ingredients separated into layers that represented the different verses of the song. I discussed the history of White Christmas written by Irving Berlin, which emerged as a nostalgic wartime song and was adapted over time into a more upbeat holiday song. I presented my project on the first day after Thanksgiving break and not only did I have a blast doing so, but the cookies seemed to be a hit with my class!
Bex’s White Christmas Cookies
- ½ cup of butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Cookie Mix Ingredients (in the mason jar):
- 1 ¼ cup flour
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- ¼ baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ tsp cardamom
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- ½ cup craisins
- ¼ cup coconut flakes
Preheat oven to 375° F.
Beat together butter, egg and vanilla.
Add cookie mix from jar and mix well.
Form dough into balls and place 2 inch. apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes. Yields around 2 dozen cookies, depending on size of cookies.
